Marcelin takes its name from Antoine Marcelin, the community's first postmaster, and was named for him in 1904. Seven years later, on September 25, 1911, it incorporated as a village. It lies within the Rural Municipality of Blaine Lake No. 434.
Today Marcelin is the administrative headquarters of the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation band government. The Muskeg Lake reserve has a proud wartime record: during World War II it had the highest rate of Indigenous enlistment in the country. Mary Greyeyes, from Muskeg Lake, became the first First Nations woman to enlist in the Canadian Forces.
